About the Book
Antioxidants scavenge free radicals and prevent or reduce the damage caused by oxidation in cells. Oxidative stress occurs from an increase in free radical production and/or insufficiency of the antioxidant system and plays an active role in the etiopathogenesis of many diseases. Consequently, it continues to be a focus of active scientific discussion and research. The book, “Free Radicals and Antioxidants” contains basic information on the chemical structure of free radicals as well as the damage they cause in cells and tissues, and the methods of protection against such damage. Additionally, it gives detailed information on the role of free radicals under physiological and pathological conditions. Following a brief introductory chapter, the book includes sections on free radical chemistry, oxidative stress, antioxidants, the beneficial and harmful effects of reactive species, measurement methods, aging and neurological diseases, cancer, and viral infections.
Keywords: Antioxidants, Free radicals, Oxidative stress, Reactive species
